The Benefits of the Total Integrated Panel System (TIPS)
At LM Construction, we proudly offer the Total Integrated Panel System (TIPS),
a state-of-the-art solution that combines exceptional thermal insulation, superior soundproofing, and robust fire resistance.
Exceptional Thermal Performance
TIPS is engineered to deliver outstanding thermal insulation. Its panel structure features high-density shotcrete paired with polystyrene layers ranging from 2.5 to 6 inches thick, creating an effective thermal barrier. This concrete sandwich panel system benefits from the mass effect, as detailed in ASHRAE 90.1, which enhances insulation performance beyond the sum of its parts. For example, a standard panel with 4 inches of EPS achieves a U value of 0.038, which is equivalent to an effective R value of 38. Thicker EPS can further improve this value. In contrast to traditional wooden 2x4 studs with an R value of about 3.5, TIPS panels offer significant reductions in heat and cold transfer. Standard walls with conventional insulation generally have an R value of 15-20, while TIPS panels can cut heating and cooling costs by 50-80%, ensuring a more comfortable indoor environment year-round.
Superior Sound Insulation
TIPS also excels in sound insulation. Our standard panel system boasts a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of at least 50, which can increase into the mid to upper 50s depending on the finishes used. In comparison, standard interior walls with insulation and drywall have an STC rating in the mid-30s. Given the logarithmic nature of the STC scale, this represents a substantial improvement. Testing shows that TIPS panels can reduce noise transmission by 42 dB, meaning even loud sounds, such as music or machinery, are only faintly heard in adjacent rooms. This makes TIPS ideal for spaces where noise control is essential, such as apartments, schools, offices, churches, and manufacturing facilities. Additionally, TIPS panels are excellent for constructing effective sound barriers and fencing.
Robust Fire Resistance
When it comes to fire safety, TIPS offers exceptional protection. Constructed from non-combustible materials, TIPS panels are certified for a two-hour fire rating. By increasing the thickness of the shotcrete to 3 inches on each face of the panel, a higher fire rating of 4 hours can be achieved. This robust fire resistance allows TIPS panels to replace the double walls traditionally required in multifamily housing projects, reducing both cost and space. It also provides peace of mind to occupants of apartments, storage units, and other properties by preventing the spread of fires from neighboring units. Additionally, TIPS is a highly attractive choice for buildings in wildfire-prone areas, offering enhanced safety and protection.
